Ask HN: How to break into software eng after graduating with no internships?
I'm graduating this semester with zero internship experience. I've done some software development as an undergraduate research assistant, but I still feel underqualified for full-time software engineer roles. At the same time, I'm excluded from the typical internship path since I'm graduating.
Any advice for breaking into the industry?
Hiring for software eng is basically negative right now (tons of layoffs, not much hiring). Demand for juniors and interns is also a lot lower than it is for seniors. I'm sorry, but you may have graduated at the worst time in history for this degree.
My sincere advice is to find any job that will pay the bills, in tech if you can, and start practicing coding on the side. You can work on OSS or your own stuff.
The hard reality is that way too many people went into software than the industry could ever need, and a lot of you just won't end up as professional coders.
